Urogynecology specializes in the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders. These disorders arise when the pelvic muscles are weakened or connective tissue is damaged due to childbirth, repeated strenuous activity, menopause, chronic disease, or pelvic surgery. Other contributing factors include heavy lifting, tobacco use, and genetics.

Pelvic floor disorders can lead to several issues, including:

  • Incontinence
  • Prolapse
  • Emptying Disorders
  • Pain
  • Overactive Bladder
  • Fistulas

You should consider consulting a urogynecologist if you experience prolapse, troublesome urinary or fecal incontinence, or if recommended by your primary doctor. Other indications for a urogynecology consultation include issues with emptying the bladder or rectum, pelvic or bladder pain, fistulas, or when specialized vaginal surgery is needed.

A urogynecologist can offer various therapies to manage or alleviate pelvic floor disorders. Treatment options are tailored to your lifestyle and goals, and may include conservative measures such as medications, pelvic exercises, behavioral or dietary modifications, and vaginal devices (pessaries). Advanced therapies might involve pelvic floor therapy with biofeedback and electric stimulation. For some conditions, safe and effective surgical options may also be recommended.

The UT Health Breast Center in Tyler

Mammography has helped reduce breast cancer deaths by 40 percent since 1990. That’s because annual mammograms can detect cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

In addition to digital mammograms, the hospital provides these imaging services in a comfortable and private environment:

  • The 3D mammogram, which scans mammogram images and marks areas of calcification, small masses and abnormalities that require further study
  • Breast ultrasound, used to confirm the presence or absence of a mass in dense or fibrous tissue, which can often obscure problems; this painless method uses high-frequency sound waves to scan and create an image of the breast tissue in question
  • Genetic testing to verify if you are at increased risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer due to family history
