Family Birthplace FAQ

With decades of experience, we’ve answered all kinds of questions from every future parent who has walked through our doors. Here are among the most frequently asked, but be sure to check with your doctor if you have any other questions or need advice.

Do I need to pre-register to have my baby at UT Health Tyler?

Yes, register for your delivery in advance with UT Health East Texas and MyChart.

With the labor and delivery (L&D) registration feature, you can enter your expected due date and select the location at which you plan to give birth. Complete all registration in advance by verifying personal information, adding insurance information and providing your obstetrician's or pediatrician's name.

This feature is accessible from the Register For My Delivery option under the Find Care menu in MyChart.

If you do not have MyChart please call 855-523-8770.

Should I take classes to prepare me for caring for my baby?

Yes, through a partnership with Birthly, UT Health Tyler now offers its patients free access to a variety of perinatal education classes virtually.

Classes offered include Early Pregnancy Preparations, Prenatal Education Bootcamp (English and Spanish), Coping and Comfort, Breastfeeding 101(English and Spanish), as well as Newborn Care (English and Spanish). All classes are live, so patients have the opportunity to learn from and interact with certified and experienced childbirth educators.

Since each class type is offered multiple times a month, patients now have more flexibility in choosing a time that fits their schedule and can connect from the comfort of their own home.

What should I bring to the hospital for my delivery?

Although every mother-to-be has her own preferences for what she wants to bring with her, we have a few recommendations based on our experience and what we have available for you during your stay with us:

  • infant car seat
  • cellphone and charger
  • camera/video camera and batteries
  • baby book (for first footprints and to record all of those first moments)
  • massagers and soothing music for during labor
  • extra or favorite blankets and pillows
  • comfortable change of clothes
  • pre-washed baby clothes and blankets for the ride home (baby clothes will be provided during your hospital stay)
  • house shoes and a robe
  • toiletries such as deodorant, makeup, hairspray, etc. (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner and sanitary napkins are available in the hospital)
